Weshalb sollten Hautpflegeprodukte keine PEGs oder Parabene enthalten?

Why shouldn't skin care products contain PEGs or parabens?

Polyethylene glycols, or PEGs for short, are synthetic substances that are used in cosmetic and care products as emulsifiers, binding agents and plasticizers. They improve the consistency of these products by ensuring that ingredients combine better with each other and the product becomes smoother. However, PEGs are derived from petroleum, which has some disadvantages.

Creams and care products made from petroleum or mineral oil-based substances hardly offer any real care for the skin. Instead of being absorbed, the oil forms an impermeable film on the surface of the skin. This prevents the skin from breathing, which can lead to problems in the long term: the skin dries out, becomes more susceptible to blemishes, and premature wrinkles can form. The skin's natural protective barrier is weakened as a result, making it less resistant to external influences. In short - who would consciously want to apply a product that contains petroleum?

Another ingredient of concern in many cosmetics is parabens, which act as synthetic preservatives against germs. They prevent cosmetic products from decomposing and thus extend their shelf life. The cosmetics industry uses various types of parabens, including methyl, ethyl, butyl and propyl paraben, as well as isopropyl, isobutyl, pentyl, benzyl and phenyl paraben.

However, parabens are suspected of posing health risks. Not only can they trigger allergic reactions, but they also act like hormones and thus interfere with the body's sensitive hormonal system. Studies suggest that they could be linked to reduced sperm quality and an increased risk of testicular cancer and breast cancer.

If you want to be on the safe side, you should choose cosmetic products that are explicitly labeled as “paraben-free” and “PEG-free.” Such products use alternative ingredients that provide gentler, more natural care.

At NICOLETTE, we believe that our products provide long-term, sustainable skin care. That's why we completely avoid PEGs, parabens, silicones, mineral oils, etc. and use natural ingredients that are scientifically proven to have a positive effect on the skin.
