Why is collagen so important?

Collagen is the main structural protein in connective tissue and provides strength, elasticity and stability in various tissues such as skin, cartilage, bones and muscles/ligaments.

It gives the skin firmness, elasticity and moisture. Collagen supports the skin from the inside and "pads" it. The breakdown of collagen in the skin leads to reduced elasticity and skin firmness, which in turn leads to the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin (dermatochalasis) and a thin, dry appearance.

As we get older, and even after the age of 25, the body's own collagen production decreases. By the age of 40, the collagen content of the skin can already have decreased by 10 to 20 percent.

But it is not only the skin that is affected.

  • The breakdown of collagen in the cartilage leads to a reduced shock absorber function due to thinning and degeneration of the cartilage, which makes the joints more susceptible to damage and promotes painful diseases such as osteoarthritis. Joint pain, stiffness and limited mobility are the consequences.

  • The breakdown of collagen in bones makes the bones more porous and brittle. This contributes to the development of osteoporosis. The result is an increased number of fractures.

  • Reduced collagen structure in tendons and ligaments, as in the skin, leads to reduced elasticity and increased susceptibility to injuries (e.g. tendon tears or ligament strains).

  • With the reduction of collagen, muscle stability is impaired and the muscles lose strength and ability to regenerate.

  • Collagen degradation in the vitreous body of the eye makes it less stable.
This can lead to liquefaction and the formation of “flying flies” (vitreous opacities).

  • Nails and hair become brittle due to reduced collagen storage.

Tip:

A balanced diet is important to support collagen production. Vitamin C, zinc and copper also promote collagen synthesis. Certain skin care products can also be beneficial. We therefore rely heavily on active ingredients in our products, such as the microalgae extract in our Hyaluronic Serum, which support collagen production.
